Psychotherapeutic Counselling

What is counselling?

Counselling is built on an open, trusting and honest relationship between client and therapist. It is a confidential space for personal development and problem-solving, and can be short-term, aiming for a solution to a specific problem, or taken at a slower, more exploratory pace, for a client seeking to make fundamental changes to their life. It is often a process in which unconscious or semi-conscious life-choices are excavated and explored, with a view to understanding the self in a new way, and finding a path out of patterns of behaviour that the client feels are not serving their interests. For many people, this involves coming to terms with difficult or traumatic life events that feel unresolved. Counselling can often help leave the past in the past, freeing the client to live life more fully in the present.

What are the benefits of counselling?

The goal of your counselling will be created by you, the client. The first conversation with a counsellor will always be about what you want to change or overcome, and your therapist will keep an eye on this goal throughout the therapeutic relationship. Being listened to, intensely and non-judgementally, by a trained practitioner entirely focused on constructing a picture of who you really are, and how you think and feel, is a powerful experience. Clients who give their all to the process often find that patterns of feeling and behaviour rooted in childhood become apparent, and discover a new understanding of the self. This can liberate the client to make new choices about the challenges in front of them.

Does this counsellor have any areas of special interest?

This counsellor, Will, works with a wide variety of clients, often people struggling with low mood, anxiety or stress. He has a particular interest in the following areas: parenthood and family challenges, men’s issues, ADHD, mid-life re-evaluation of priorities, artistic and creative struggles.

What happens during a session?

Your session will by led by you, but guided by your counsellor. You will always be listened to attentively, without judgement. As trust builds, you will probably find yourself recalling half-forgotten events that may have shaped the way you see yourself. Connections between disparate events and relationships may come to light. Layers of how your present yourself to others in order to be liked or admired are often peeled away to reach an appraisal of the self that can feel new and surprising. The pace at which this happens is entirely in the hands of the client. There will never be any pressure to explore emotions or events that you do not feel ready to share.

Frequency of sessions

The counsellor will be available on a regular weekly basis, at the same time and place, for as long as required. The therapist will give notice of any breaks or unusual changes to arrangements. In case of illness, travel or mobility issues, online sessions are available via Zoom.

If you would like to consider counselling sessions with Will, please let us know and we will arrange a 20-minute phone or Zoom consultation to discuss your needs. There is no charge for this initial consultation.
