Psychodynamic Counselling

Psychodynamic Counselling

What is counselling?

Counselling is a process that involves the client and the counsellor where the client talks about areas of their life that they are finding hard. It may be difficulties within relationships (home/work), issues in childhood, previous trauma, or bereavement and loss. Counsellors offer clients a non-judgemental space to enable them to explore their feelings within a safe environment. A trusting therapeutic relationship is crucial to facilitate change for the client.

What are the benefits of counselling?

Clients can experience a space where they feel truly heard and held, and able to express the shadow side of themselves. Expressing thoughts and feelings can help a client to understand their own process and why they behave in certain ways, as formative experiences often influence present behaviours. Counselling can help a client develop self-awareness/personal development, better communication within relationships and/or improved self-esteem/confidence. Counselling can help a client to strengthen their internal resources so that they can cope better with life. The experience of being listened to and supported as a client can be hugely powerful.

Psychodynamic counselling

Psychodynamic counselling is a relational process where unconscious material often unfolds in the room and becomes conscious, which can help clients to better understand themselves. It is a client led process where the client brings material from their experiences to explore further. Connections between past and present can become clearer to the client and “ah ha” moments can occur.

What happens during a session?

The counsellor provides a safe space and is a container for the client’s thoughts and feelings to be explored at their own pace. The client is in charge of what they want to explore. There can be quiet moments during sessions in between reflections, and the counsellor may make interventions to gently highlight any patterns or to ask clarifying questions to aid understanding. Shona may work creatively at times as different aspects of self can be revealed.
