Hawaiian Lomi Lomi (Temple Style)
There are many different types of massage – Sports, Swedish, Indian Head Massage, and so on. And then there is the unique massage experience of Lomi Lomi, which has come to Edinburgh only recently. This massage is so different in intent and practice that it is truly a profound and uplifting massage that can bring about great changes in our thoughts and emotions as well as bringing about improvements to our body and overall wellbeing.
Where does Lomi Lomi come from and what does it mean?
Lomi Lomi is a healing massage based on the Hawaiian philosophy of Huna. We all think of Hawaii as a tropical island of great beauty and peace. A tropical paradise. The happy, peaceful ambience of Hawaii reflects the Hawaiian philosophy of Huna. In Huna, seeking harmony and peace is of first importance. It is this way of life that is reflected in Lomi Lomi, which is designed to bring about peace and harmony to the body and spirit.
Lomi Lomi means ‘to rub or massage’ and it is the traditional massage of this island and the other Polynesian islands. It is sometimes called ‘Kahuna Bodywork’. It was developed with care and love over many centuries. The original practitioners were Kahuna priests who developed this powerful massage as a specialised and ritualised massage designed to take massage into higher dimensions of being in order to bring about extraordinary healing and transformation. Using their heightened mental and spiritual powers, these early practitioners created not just a massage, but a powerful healing experience. Later, with the success and fame of Lomi Lomi, this healing massage with its message of spiritual wisdom and love for ourselves and our bodies came to be practised by a local healer or a gifted family member. We in the Western world are privileged to have specialist practitioners, such as Pamela, who have been trained in this ancient healing art.
What can Lomi Lomi achieve for you?
Lomi Lomi helps release the energy blockages which bedevil the human body and which we collect over a lifetime of living. These energy blockages are reflected in the imbalances in the overall health of our bodies. A lack of balance, of disharmony, in the totality of our beings, will create physical effects in our bodies. That is what Lomi Lomi strives to restore - this wonderful sense of physical wellbeing and harmony within, as it gives the blocked energy a new direction. So Lomi Lomi is not just a physical experience; it also facilitates healing on the mental, emotional and spiritual levels of our existence.
What happens in a Lomi Lomi massage session?
To begin with it is important for the therapist to establish a connection with the client. Often the intention is set for the desired outcome of the massage session and a brief blessing is given. There is a period of stillness at the beginning with the practitioner’s hands resting gently on the client’s body, often on the back. Then begins a series of long, slow, flowing strokes, both vibrant and relaxing. These strokes work deeply into the muscle tissue, releasing blocked energy and creating a unique experience of harmony and peace. These strokes use both hands and arms in a fluid, rhythmic motion that feels like the motion of waves. As the wave-like motions of the Lomi Lomi massage wash over you, your mind, body and spirit become re-vitalised. In this peaceful space, healing takes place. Clients often find themselves spontaneously letting go of old beliefs and limiting behavioural patterns.
Using a variety of strokes, stretches and rotations, the therapist gradually releases the body tensions.
There are four basic principles of Lomi Lomi:
Maximum touch - The hands, forearms and body weight of the therapist are used
Flowing movement - All strokes are flowing, seamless and gliding
Aloha Deep Connection - Throughout the session there is a flow of compassion, love and good will to the client
Extended Awareness - The therapist is always aware of the dynamic forces, which are working simultaneously throughout the client’s body
